Album Spotlight: People Under the Stairs' "O.S.T."

Sounds Like: Jurassic 5, Hieroglyphics, Gang Starr

Here's another Los Angeles based Hip-hop group. "People Under the Stairs" is composed of two members: Special K (also known as "Kidd Drunkadelic") and Thes One. People Under the Stairs has been around since about 1997, so they are definitely contemporaries of Jurassic 5, who released their first album in 1997. If you like Jurassic 5 you should definitely check People Under the Stairs. I think groups like Jurassic 5 are unique and it is rare to find more groups like them. Fortunately People Under the Stairs have that same laid back, California underground style. If you are like me and have been listening to Jurassic 5 for a while now and are looking for more of their style, People Under the Stairs is definitely a good next step.

I think the album "O.S.T." is the best place to start with People Under the Stairs' catalogue. It is their 3rd studio album and was released in 2002. This album is as chill as it gets. This rap duo does a great job (for me) of conveying the image of the Los Angeles lifestyle to the listener. When I listen to this album I picture aimlessly walking through the sunny streets of L.A., bullshitting with friends, drinking, smoking, and just living life. These guys are rapping about their everyday life (real life, not pretending they are drug dealers or gangsters).

Here are 5 of my favorite tracks on this album (no particular order):
1. Acid Rain Drops
2. The Suite for Beaver Part 1
3. The L.A. Song
4. Montenegro Slang
5. O.S.T. (Original Soundtrack)

This album is one of those that really flows from front to back. Every song is good, there are at least 4 more songs on the album that I could make a case for being in my top 5. If you like what you hear definitely check the whole thing out.
