Artist Highlight: State Radio

I've been listening to a playlist I made from freshman year all day today, kind of thinking back on my first year in school. The playlist was on random and the acoustic live version of this State Radio song came on:

"Mr. Larkin" by State Radio

State Radio is a Boston based trio (see video below)
there used to be a version of the song over a Red Sox montage which was badass, but it got removed from youtube cause it violated MLB copyright laws.... relax Bud Selig

Bud Selig - Commissioner of Major League Baseball
(PS - I'm sure Bud Selig had nothing to do with removing this video from youtube, I just needed a scapegoat)

"Knights of Bostonia" by State Radio

According to wikipedia, State Radio "Infuses a blend of Roots-Reggae, Ska, Punk and Rock". This last song I think exemplifies this fusion best, and is also one of my favorites by the group:

"Right Me Up" by State Radio

I Gotta Git Up, Get Out, and get somethin....

Got a week off before finals right now, the problem is that the lack of classes is causing a lack of motivation and I'm being real lazy right now. Well I think It's time to get off my ass and buckle down, and I had to dig out this old school Outkast gem "Git Up, Get Out" to do it. This song features 4 verses: first by Cee-Lo Green, the second by Big Boi, third by Big Grip, and Andre closes it up in Mariano Rivera style (see below)....

This one comes off of Outkast's debut LP "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik", all the way back from 1994. I heard it first from the hip-hop duo's compilation disk: "Big Boi & Dre Present Outkast" which came out in 2001. For anyone trying to get into the group, i personally think this is the best way to start.... the album is their greatest hits up to "Stankonia" chosen by Andre 3k and Big Boi themselves -- really good stuff.

Jam of the Day: Daylight by Aesop Rock

I think Big Sean has a lot of potential

First of all Big Sean reps Detroit so I felt obligated to start this post off by giving a little respect to another Detroit icon with the initials B.S. -- Barry Sanders, one of my favorite athletes ever... Sundays rolling around and if a Barry Sanders montage to the "Requiem for a Dream" theme song doesn't get you pumped for football than nothing will...

Anyway..........

I just heard Kanye's latest G.O.O.D. Friday track called "Don't Look Down" featuring Lupe, Mos Def, and Big Sean. Personally, I think Big Sean kills it (see link below) so I thought it was an appropriate time to dedicate a post to him.
Kanye West - Don't Look Now (feat. Lupe Fiasco, Mos Def, Big Sean)

Sean Anderson was born on March 25, 1988. If Big Sean had gone to college with me he would have already graduated last spring, however he is still only considered a Freshman to the rap game.

Anderson was born in Santa Monica, California but moved to Detroit, Michigan at the age of 2 months.

In his freestyle over Gucci Mane's "Lemonade" (see below), Big Sean gives a shout out to "D-town, westside"...

Big Sean signed with Kanye's label "G.O.O.D. Music" in 2007. A year later he signed with Def Jam. He has yet to release a full length album, but has had some success in the mixtape game.

Here are a few notable features that Big Sean does:

1. Kanye West ft. Big Sean - Paranoid (Remix)

2. Wale ft. Big Sean - Wonder Why (Prod. by 9th Wonder)

  • Big Sean comes in at the 1:33 mark

This is My Favorite Wiz Khalifa Song Right Now (Revised*)

Taylor Gang and Paper Planes... "Young Wiz" Khalifa reps the "black and yellow", colors associated with the sports teams of his home town, Pittsburgh (See Below). Born on September 8, 1987 Khalifa's real name is Cameron Jibril Thomaz.
"And bein' from Pittsburgh/ they sayin' they concerned/
With tryna make a lane 'cause my sound is unique"
Thomaz was actually not born in Pittsburgh, but in Minot, North Dakota. Before finally settling down in Pittsburgh Thomaz also lived in England and Japan. His name khalifa is Arabic for "successor" or "wisdom".  It's said that because Khalifa also means "Wisdom"... He shortened Wisdom to Wiz.

Bonus Track: "Take Yo Bitch"
Another Track off of Khalifa's mixtape "Burn After Rolling"
